Chinook 41120 Review by Christopher M. (McDonough, GA, USA)

This is an excellent percolator for camping or home. We ordered the aluminum 20 cup and it was more than enough for my father who drinks a whole 12 cup pot in one day plus all of us had coffee when we went camping. I would recommend this for big coffee drinkers or a crowd of up to 10 because after all that is about 100 ounces of coffee it can hold. It probably won't hold but up to 20 level tablespoonfuls of coffee or so but we do not like ours really strong.

You might get several grounds in your cup toward the end but it would not be a big deal since they sink to the bottom. Though if you dont take out the basket to put the grounds in you will have more grounds in the coffee. I would recommend this for a camping coffeemaker because it gets just a few grounds in the bottom. Any percolator will do that some. Though filters should not be used. It will affect the strength and you will have paper to clean out with the grounds.

The design unfortunately will burn your fingers if you have it wide open on a camping stove. We found that out the hard way. They should have put rubber over the handles on this. We put paper towels folded up and put them on there because it was too hot to handle. It does percolate in under an hour. Usually for us it was 45 minutes. This is a great product overall and would recommend this product. Just be careful of the handles being hot if you have it wide open on a propane camping stove.

Before you order, double check the listing above as this site is using the same reviews on several pages for two different styles of coffeepots from the same manufacturer. The version I own is the Chinook Timberline stainless steel pot, but there is also an aluminum version that is not nearly as well made called the Chinook Canyon. The Timberline is stainless steel and has the wood trim on the handle, hinged lid, glass dome and stainless steel basket assembly. The Canyon is an aluminum camping pot that has folding wire handles, removable lid, it is aluminum, has the plastic dome, and an aluminum basket assembly.

I prefer percolators over drip coffeemakers. My grandma never liked drip coffeemakers, and it took me many years to learn why. For starters I have never had to replace a stove top percolator because it was broken, but have owned countless expensive drip coffeemakers. Coffeemakers have carafes that break , a clock to reset, takes up counter-space, parts you can't get to to clean inside, buttons to fuss with, paper filters to replace. Mineral deposits can build up in the lines. After a few years, some drip coffeemakers start to taste acidic, but not my percolator. With a percolator you can adjust the perking time to get the exact brew strength you like. I also have an old electric percolator from the 1950's and it works great. My simple percolating pot lasts years longer, and the clean-up and maintenance is simpler. Now you can buy paper filters for percolators too, but I think that is a waste of money. For taste, I get a full bodied dark coffee, and I do not need to buy the high dollar coffee I used to buy to get the same robust flavor. My opinion anyway.

The version I bought is the 6 cup but they do sell other sizes on this page. I have had it for about 14 years before I ran into it here. It still looks new and still makes a great cup of coffee. This pot is very sturdy, high quality 18/8 stainless steel with a strong handle. The lid has a hinge so that when you pour a cup the lid does not fall out. It has a water mark to help you measure out water. If you take the basket out you can use it to heat water for tea and hot chocolate as well. This model has a real glass dome, and some folks can break them. They sell replacements in 2 sizes at Amazon.com for less than a pack of paper filters. Do not use this on a fire, the handle may get damaged just like a plastic or rubber handle would. And use a potholder, like any pan or pot, it can get hot.

TIPS: Wet the inside of the basket before you put grounds in, to help prevent grounds from going through the holes. Use a medium ground blend, if you use a fine blend you may need to use a paper filter inside the basket. Don't cram the coffee grounds down into the basket either. Some folks like to heat the water good and hot, and then put the basket in, I don't as that is a good way to get burned.

RECOMMENDATION: Great pot, my favorite for home use. I love percolators and have reviewed over a dozen here, and have a Listmania called "Camp Coffee Pot Percolator Including Campfire Coffeepot".

Chinook 41120 Review by W. Hoyt "Pee Wee Shooter" (Southern California)

Sturdy, quality built percolator. Just like grandma and granpa used to have. The Coffee seems to have more taste (I use the Trader Joe's Fench Roast) then when made in automatic machine. Also this is the perfect size for two people with each getting a "top off." No complaints, would purchase again.
